DESCRIPTION
Important new firmware is now available for the MSA1500cs and MSA20. A
firmware flash utility is available for download that incorporated
firmware ver. 4.94 for the MSA1500cs and firmware ver. 1.28 for the MSA20.
HP recommends upgrading to this new firmware at the next scheduled
maintenance window or as soon as practical. |
SCOPE
This firmware applies to all MSA1500cs and/or MSA20
products. |
RESOLUTION
Summary of Changes: Firmware 4.94 and 1.28 will successfully address
the following issues:
MSA1500 cs 4.94FW
-
Due to parts availability, future controllers
will have alternate memory components that are functionally identical to
existing components but will require firmware version 4.94. Redundant
controllers require matching firmware versions, therefore an upgrade to
4.94 is required.

Improves Performance seen over prior FW
-
Intermittent critical lockups during heavy I/O
on the same dual channel SCSI I/O module
-
Improves interaction with MSA20
For further details see the 4.94 firmware release notes provided with
the download packages.
MSA20 1.28FW
- Addressed an issue with write operations to cache NVRAM that could
cause the MSA20 to become unresponsive.
- Addressed an issue where the MSA20 could repeatedly attempt to read
data from an area of the disk drive previously flagged with an
uncorrectable error. This could cause the MSA20 to become
unresponsive.
For further details see the 1.28 firmware release notes provided with
the download packages.
NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
1) There is a specific MSA1500 cs 4.94/1.26 limitation when
MSA20 (SATA) is behind MSA1500 with RAID 0 or RAID 1+
0:
- a minimum of 4 drives is required per RAID set
- RAID 0 and RAID 1+ 0 are NOT supported on Windows 64bit servers.
- For required driver modifications in RAID 0 and RAID 1+ 0
volumes running Linux, refer to the following:
No modifications are required unless using SLES 9
and/or the 8.00.00-22 QLogic driver. If you are using SLES9 and/or
the 8.00.00-22, then RAID 0 and RAID 1+ 0 are not supported unless
the maximum transfer size is limited in the driver by taking the
following action:
A) Obtain and un-tar the HBA driver package:
tar -xvzf hp_qla2x00-2004-10-19.tar.gz
B) Install the QLogic HBA drivers from the source RPM file:
rpm -Uvh hpqla2x00src-8.00.00-22.linux.rpm
C) Change directory to the location of the QLogic source files:
cd
/opt/hp/src/hp_qla2x00src/qla2xxx-8.00.00
D) Edit the file qla_os.c and change the value of the variable
".max_sectors":
original value -> .max_sectors 0xffff
change to... -> .max_sectors 0x0400
E) Rebuild the driver (requires kernel source files to be
installed):
cd
/opt/hp/src/hp_qla2x00src/./build_driver
F) Unload and reload the driver to ensure new driver is in
active:
rmmod qla2300
modprobe qla2300
2) When updating MSA1000 FW (4.32) in a MSA1500 enclosure the
MSA flash utility will not work unless all attached JBODs are
disconnected.
- This is not an issue when cloning from MSA1000 FW to MSA1500 cs
FW
- This is an issue if a customer is migrating from an MSA1000 to
MSA1500 cs or if they are replacing a MSA1500 single controller
failure (spares ship with 4.32).
- Workaround: Disconnect all JBODs & the flash utility will
work fine, this has been added to the latest utility documentation.
- Long term: Development team will update flash utility on the
web. Check latest FW release notes for any
changes.

SERVICE ACTION
All customers should update to this new firmware as soon as practical
or at the next maintenance window.
